Vice Chairman of Congressional Hispanic Conference: Obama is not doing enough for Hispanics
January 6, 2012
Washington D.C. – Vice Chairman Francisco “Quico” Canseco (TX-23) issued the following statement in reaction to the Department of Labor’s announcement that for the month of December the unemployment rate amongst Hispanic was 11%:
“Today, The Department of Labor released the December jobs report which shows that the Hispanic unemployment rate remained above 11%, which is higher than the already unacceptable national average that has been at or above 8% for 35 straight months. While President Obama and his liberal colleagues in the Democrat-controlled Senate refuse to work with House Republicans on the issue of job creation, Hispanic families are hurting with more than 1 out of every 10 Hispanics out of work. We’ve tried it President Obama and Washington Democrats’ way, attempting to spend our way to economic prosperity and jobs growth, and it didn’t work. I’ve met with numerous small businesses – including those owned by Hispanics – and I’ve listened to what they tell me that is holding them back from expanding their businesses and creating jobs, which is uncertainty in the economy. As a Hispanic and former business owner, I am frustrated that the President and the Democrat-controlled Senate have refused to act on the nearly 30 jobs bills that have passed, many on a bipartisan basis, through the House that are attempting to deal with the uncertainty in the economy. Hispanics want action on job creation, not more campaign rhetoric, from President Obama and Washington Democrats,” said Congressman Canseco.
Today, the Department of Labor announced that in December the unemployment rate for Hispanics remained at about 11%.
