Texas lawmakers praise Supreme Court decision to review Obama's health care overhaul

Washington, Nov 14, 2011 -
Texas lawmakers are praising the U.S. Supreme Court decision today to hear the legal challenge by some states to President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.

The outcome of the case will likely play a crucial role in the 2012 presidential election as the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case in March with a ruling expected as early as June.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry reacted to the court’s decision to hear the case while campaigning for the GOP presidential nomination.

“Obamacare is an unprecedented overreach and an unconstitutional infringement upon individual liberties,” Perry said in a statement.

Texas, along with 25 other states, is challenging the constitutionality of the law, targeting the requirement that states must participate or lose federal money. Perry’s office contends that the Medicaid expansion would cost Texan taxpayers more than $27 billion over 10 years starting in 2014.

“The Supreme Court’s decision to hear this case quickly is encouraging news for Texas, which faces massive cost explosions under Obamacare, and for Americans everywhere who don’t want the federal government forcing them to buy specific goods and services,” Perry said.
