SAN ANTONIO -- It came down to the wire, but lawmaker have come up with a plan to keep the nation from defaulting on its financial obligations.

The key, some local lawmakers said, was coming to a compromise.

"What you saw there was the far right dropped out; the far left dropped out and there were a lot of us in the middle -- Democrats and Republicans -- that voted on this deal to get it done," Rep. Henry Cuellar, Texas-28, said.

The measure raises the debt ceiling by $2.4 trillion through 2012 and cuts $1.2 trillion in spending over the next 10 years.

"This was not the best bill that I would have wanted," said Rep. Francisco "Quico" Canseco, Texas-23, said. "In fact, I loathed the idea of raising the debt ceiling, but at a certain point in time, especially when you only control one-third of the process, you have to start governing."
