Congressman Canseco's Statement on the July Jobs Report
August 3, 2012
Washington, D.C. - Congressman Francisco “Quico” Canseco (TX-23), a former small businessman and strong supporter of pro-growth economic policies, issued the following statement after the Department of Labor released the monthly jobs report for July, which showed the unemployment rate rose slightly to 8.3% and that almost 13 million Americans remain unemployed:
“Despite showing positive job creation in July, the rest of today’s jobs report doesn’t contain good news for the American economy. July became the 42nd straight month that the unemployment rate has been above 8%, almost 13 million Americans remain unemployed, the ‘real unemployment’ rate is at 15%, and workforce participation continues to be stuck at a level not seen on a sustained basis since the Carter Administration. These are the hallmarks of a weak economy, and the proof that President Obama's economic policies have failed. The American people know this, yet the Obama Administration continues to spin these numbers as evidence that President Obama’s economic policies have worked and that our economy has recovered.”
"Incredibly, we just keep seeing more of the same from the Obama Administration and the Democrat-led Senate. More spending, more taxes, and more regulations heaped on the private sector are the only ideas they’ve proposed to kick-start our economy. Over the last year and a half, I’ve spent countless hours with small businesses and families throughout the 23rd District of Texas that have expressed to me their grave concerns over our national debt, which is now roughly $16 trillion, and a lack of confidence in our economy. I certainly don’t blame them - the last three and a half years have been one of the most difficult periods to do business in recent memory. Because of laws such as Obamacare and the Dodd-Frank bill, in addition to excessive and burdensome regulations that are being churned out by federal agencies such as the EPA, businesses across America have frozen plans to expand and hire new employees.”
"By comparison, the House of Representatives has passed over 30 pieces of job-creating legislation that would lift the burdens off of American businesses, prevent massive tax hikes for all Americans, and allow for much-needed growth in our economy. But for nothing other than purely political reasons, the Democrat-led Senate and the Obama Administration have refused to consider these measures. We tried it their way – attempting to spend, tax, and regulate our way to economic prosperity – for two years, and all it has gotten the American people is the worst unemployment crisis since the Great Depression and an economy on the verge of slipping back into recession. We have the greatest economy in the world, but the policies of the last three and a half years have kept a lid on it. This is unacceptable – we must unleash the power and the talent that exists within the private sector of America," said Congressman Canseco.
