Congressman Canseco's Statement on House Passage of the Red Tape Reduction and Small Business Job Creation Act (H.R. 4078)
July 26, 2012
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Francisco “Quico” Canseco (TX-23), a former small business owner, released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the Red Tape Reduction and Small Business Job Creation Act (H.R. 4078):
“As I travel through the 23rd District of Texas and visit with small business owners, I constantly hear about the burdens Washington imposes upon them and how they’re drowning in all of the red tape coming from Washington. Make no mistake, there is a flood of new regulations and rules coming out of Washington. Since taking office, the Obama Administration has proposed over 400 major regulations - or regulations predicted to have an over $100 million or more impact on the economy. For regulations published this year, the paperwork compliance burden would require 114.1 million hours, or 13,000 years, to complete. It’s no surprise, then, that businesses are suffering under the suffocating amount of red tape coming from the current administration. In fact, a survey done by the United States Chamber of Commerce on the outlook for small businesses found that 78 percent of those asked said taxes, regulations and laws coming from Washington directly inhibit their ability to hire more employees.”
“Not only is Washington’s regulatory burden preventing existing businesses from expanding and creating jobs, it’s keeping new businesses from even being started. The current economic and regulatory climate that we find ourselves in under the Obama Administration has become so great that it prevents people whose American Dream is to become an entrepreneur from doing so. According to the World Bank’s Doing Business 2012 report, the U.S. now ranks 13th in the world in the ease of starting a new business and has been steadily declining since President Obama took office.”
“Burdensome Washington regulations shouldn’t be the reason that Americans don’t have the opportunity to create a success story for themselves. Overregulation by Washington cannot be the reason that the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs doesn’t grow a business or get it off of the ground in the first place. Nothing less than the future of the American Dream is at stake. To ensure the American Dream doesn’t drown in the sea of Washington red tape, the House of Representatives passed the Red Tape Reduction and Small Business Job Creation Act (H.R. 4078). This common sense legislation would cut government red tape and clear some of the burdens that make it hard to start a business and keep small businesses from creating jobs. I believe there is a place for regulation, but not at the expense of strangling entrepreneurship and job creation. I remain committed to ensuring that those who dream of owning their own business, or those who are working to grow their own business are not overly burdened by federal regulations,” concluded Congressman Canseco.
