Congressman Canseco's Statement on House Passage of the Job Protection and Recession Prevention Act

August 1, 2012

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Francisco “Quico” Canseco (TX-23) released the following statement after the House passed the Job Protection and Recession Prevention Act (H.R. 8) on a 256 to 171 vote:

“American families and small businesses are set to be hit with a massive tax increase on January 1st unless Congress and President Obama act to prevent it. Today, I supported the Job Protection and Recession Prevention Act, which the House of Representatives passed to prevent this massive tax increase for all Americans.”

“I've traveled throughout the 23rd District of Texas and visited with numerous small business owners. I've heard from them firsthand how important it is to keep taxes low for our small businesses and local entrepreneurs as they work to grow their companies and support our struggling economy.”

“Unfortunately, President Obama and his allies in Washington have proposed a plan that would prevent tax increases for some Americans by raising taxes on those American families making $250,000 or more annually. While it may make for good political rhetoric to call these families 'wealthy', the reality is these are hard-working families and small business owners, and raising their taxes will hurt small businesses and destroy jobs. According to the non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation, 53 percent of small business income would be affected by President Obama's proposed tax increases, and an Ernst & Young study has shown the President's tax plan will result in the loss of 710,000 jobs.”

“At a time when our economy is in the midst of an economic downturn and job growth is lackluster, increasing taxes on the job engines of our economy does not make sense. We're a tax increase away from an economic recession, not an economic recovery. The House of Representatives has done its work to prevent the looming tax increases for all Americans by passing the Job Protection and Recession Prevention Act. It's now up to the United States Senate and President Obama to act to prevent massive tax increases for all Americans.”
