Congressman Canseco's Statement on the December Jobs Report
January 6, 2012
Washington, DC – Congressman Francisco “Quico” Canseco (TX-23), a member of the House Financial Services Committee and former small businessman, issued the following statement in reaction to the Department of Labor’s announcement that for the month of December the unemployment rate was 8.5%:
“Today we got some welcome news that, despite the still struggling economy, the unemployment rate dropped to 8.5%. While this is the lowest level in almost three years, this is nonetheless the 35th consecutive month where the unemployment rate is above 8%. There are still too many unemployed Americans that want a job and cannot find one, so we must continue to work toward creating economic certainty for job creators,” said Congressman Canseco.
“There is a lot of work we must do if we want to get this economy back on track and robustly creating jobs. That is why the House of Representatives has passed nearly 30 jobs bills – many on a bipartisan basis – that are awaiting action in the Democrat-controlled United States Senate. These jobs bills will help create jobs by eliminating some of the uncertainty plaguing job creators, which is causing them to hold back on growing their businesses and hiring new employees. President Obama needs to do what is right by America and persuade his liberals colleagues in the United States Senate led by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to at least bring up for consideration the nearly 30 bipartisan jobs bills passed by the House of Representatives. If the United States Senate actually did its job and considered these bills, more Americans might be able to find a job,” concluded Congressman Canseco.
Today, the Department of Labor announced that in December the unemployment rate fell to 8.5% and that 13.1 million Americans are jobless.
