Congressman Canseco's Statement on the August Jobs Report

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Francisco “Quico” Canseco, a former small businessman and a member of the House Financial Services Committee, issued the following statement in reaction to today’s job report released by the Department of Labor for the month of August:

“This morning we received more sobering news about our troubled economy. After two and a half years of record government spending, trillion-plus dollar deficits, and countless government programs, our economy created zero jobs during the month of August. Unemployment has now been above 8 percent for 31 straight months. This is simply unacceptable to the millions of Americans who are out of work. Despite all the promises from the administration and from Congressional Democrats, job creation has come to a screeching halt, and the United States economy is teetering on the edge.

In recent months, we’ve seen the Obama administration attack a U.S. company, Boeing, for trying to create jobs in a right-to-work state, propose damaging regulations that will hurt job creation and capital formation, and sit idly by as our nation’s debt reaches catastrophic levels. And just this past week, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit to prevent the merger of AT&T and T-Mobile, which could cost jobs and ultimately hurt consumers. President Obama, the Democrat controlled Senate, and Washington liberals have failed in putting forth policies to create jobs and have actively fought against all of the job creating policies House Republicans have passed.

For example, House Republicans have passed H.R. 1231, which would end the Obama administration’s moratorium on offshore drilling, thereby immediately creating jobs in that industry; H. Con Res 34, which puts our nation on a sustainable fiscal path; and H.R. 1315, which brings greater accountability to a newly created financial regulator that is currently a source of great uncertainty in our economy.

Next week President Obama is set to address the nation on a jobs plan. But we don’t need another speech – we just need the President and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to pass the measures House Republicans have already approved. In the mean time, I will continue to do my part and stand up for Texans by supporting legislation to create jobs and put us on the road to economic recovery,” concluded Congressman Canseco.
