Congressman Canseco visits Sonora, Talks with Local Businesses and Residents

August 10, 2012

Sonora, TX - Congressman Francisco “Quico” Canseco (TX-23), a former small business owner and strong supporter of keeping taxes low, visited with local business owners and community leaders of Sonora on Tuesday.

Congressman Canseco’s visit to Sonora included several meetings with small businesses and local leaders.  The visit began with a meeting that included Sonora Mayor Smith Neal and City Manager Charlie Graves, where the discussion centered on local infrastructure projects and the challenges of providing rural health care.  “I enjoyed getting the chance to sit down with Mayor Neal and City Manager Graves and listen to what they’re working on in Sonora, as well as to discuss how I can be of further assistance to the community and serve as a resource,,” said Congressman Canseco.  “We also discussed the challenges of providing health care in rural areas, and I assured Mayor Neal I understand this challenge and that I will continue working to protect the ability of residents in rural areas to have access to quality, affordable health care,” Canseco said.

Canseco later attended the Sonora Downtown Lions Club meeting, where he provided members with a brief legislative update about the latest happenings in the House of Representatives.  While attending the Sonora Downtown Lions Club meeting, Congressman Canseco had the opportunity to listen to their concerns, some of which included the importance of repealing Obamacare, how burdensome over-regulation by Washington is on small businesses, and how we need to fully repeal the Death Tax.

“Obamacare is bad for both the economy and the health care of Americans.  It is a government takeover of health care that puts Washington bureaucrats in charge of your health care to make decisions that you and your doctor should make.  Furthermore, it cuts over half a trillion dollars from Medicare to pay for other spending, jeopardizing seniors’ access to health care.  Obamacare is bad for our economy because of all of the mandates and tax increases, and it creates uncertainty for small businesses and has left many small business owners unsure of how they will pay the new costs associated with complying with the law.  Another concern I heard from Lions Club members was the need to fully repeal the Death Tax, and how if we don’t, this unfair tax will continue to negatively affect family farmers and ranchers, preventing them from passing along the farm or ranch intact to future generations,” said Canseco.

“I always enjoy the opportunity to meet with the constituents of the 23rd District of Texas.  It allows me to take their common-sense feedback with me to the House of Representatives as we work on solutions to get our nation and economy turned around,” concluded Congressman Canseco.
