Congressman Canseco urges President to act quickly on Gov. Perry's Request to Declare a Major Disaster in the State of Texas

April 19, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Francisco “Quico” Canseco (TX-23) and members of the Texas Congressional Delegation sent a letter to President Obama urging him to quickly approve Texas Governor Rick Perry’s request for a major disaster declaration for the State of Texas as a result of major wildland fires:

“This past weekend, I saw firsthand the damage and devastation caused by wildfires that have rolled through parts of West Texas and in the 23rd District. The fires have not only left the landscape burnt but have destroyed homes and businesses across Texas,” said Congressman Canseco.

“Wildland fires still pose a great danger to everyone in the State of Texas. Right now, the state and local governments are doing everything they can to battle these fires. However, Governor Perry has indicated that the resources needed by state and local governments could soon be exhausted. Ensuring that funding is available to meet the threat posed by wildfire is absolutely critical to protecting the lives and property of Texans. I am proud that today the Texas Congressional Delegation was able to send a letter to President Obama asking that he quickly approve Governor Perry’s request for a major disaster declaration for Texas that will make available federal disaster funds to help meet the threat of the wildfires.” Canseco concluded.
