Congressman Canseco statement on the CR: the good, the bad and the ugly

April 14, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Francisco “Quico” Canseco (TX-23) released the following statement after taking a vote to fund the federal government:

“After taking a very hard look at H.R. 1473, I concluded that ultimately it was worthy of my support for one reason:  it moves us in the direction we want to go by cutting spending.  It is not a perfect bill, as we must do much more to cut spending if we are to put our nation back on a sustainable fiscal path.  It truly is a bill that has the good, the bad, and the ugly.  However, at the end of the day, it contained just enoughgood. H.R. 1473begins taking us down the difficult road of pulling our country back from the edge of financial disaster.  The American people have made it clear that they expect Congress to cut spending because they understand that our nation's fiscal health is in dire straits.

“There is no denying that we should be making deeper spending cuts.  However, Senator Harry Reid and liberals in the United States Senate chose to stand with President Obama in support of the status quo:out-of-control wasteful Washington spending.  Because the House of Representatives had only one seat out of the three at the table, it simply wasn’t possible to get a spending cut any larger that could become law.

“House Republicans fought a hard battle to cut spending and we’ve cut $38 billion. It is imperative that we not lose focus of the big picture; we fought this battle and won a small victory to cut billions, now it is time to cut trillions. The next battle looms near, and it is a bigger, evermore crucial battle because it sets America on one of two paths: one of individual freedom and fiscal sustainability or one of ever-growing government and debt.

“The people of the 23rd District of Texas sent me here to cut spending and get our fiscal house in order, and that is what I intend to do and this bill does. We did not get into our fiscal mess overnight, and we will not get out of it overnight.  H.R. 1473 is a good – albeit small – step in the right direction.”
