Canseco Pleased With Resolve of U.S./Mexico Cross-Border Trucking Dispute
Washington, DC – Congressman Francisco “Quico” Canseco (TX-23), an ardent supporter of increased trade, released the following statement in response to the United States and Mexico finalizing the agreement to restart cross-border trucking between the two nations.
“Today’s action finally puts to rest a trade dispute between the United States and one of our largest and most important trading partners, Mexico. Trade with Mexico is an important source of jobs, especially in Texas, and removing the Mexican retaliatory tariffs will remove an impediment to job creation,” said Congressman Canseco. “This agreement also places a particular emphasis on safety to ensure that our highways remain safe. Mexican carriers must meet rigorous safety standards and go through a thorough inspection process in order to participate in the program and to have access to U.S. highways,” Congressman Canseco concluded.
Congressman Canseco has strongly supported resolving this dispute and restarting a cross-border trucking program with Mexico. He led a letter, signed by several freshman Members of Congress to President Obama in support of the program. He also signed onto bipartisan letter led by Congressman Doc Hastings (R-WA) urging the President to take actions necessary to restart the program to resolve this trade dispute with Mexico.
